The Band-Aid®: Inspired By a Real New Jersey Housewife

Are Band-Aids® a staple in your house? Well, you can thank a New Jersey housewife for that!

In 1920, housewife Josephine Dickson often suffered minor cuts and burns while preparing dinner for her husband, Earle. One night while Earle was cutting strips of gauze and tape to wrap around her fingers, he got the idea to combine both the gauze and tape into strips – and so the Band-Aid® was born!

A Johnson & Johnson employee, Earle told his boss about his idea - and adhesive Band-Aid® bandages went into production that same year. Earle eventually became Vice President of the company, but it was Josephine who inspired it all.
